Mobilizing Our Churches for Prayer
Part of the work of the Steering Team during Phase One of the Partnership for Missional Church is to get the entire church praying. It’s easy for me, sitting here in my office at a university, to put something like that on a To-Do list that I don’t actually have to do! But, I imagine it’s not that easy for those of you “in the trenches.” I invite you to share what your congregation is doing to see this goal become a reality. Any insights from churches in the Central Texas cluster that have already walked through this phase of the journey are more than welcome, too!

The Woodburn church is using one of our members who recently received her masters degree in Spiritual Formation to teach our Summer Together classes in spiritual formation using different ways to draw near to God through different kinds of prayer, meditation, journalling, etc.
We traditionally have been a church that prays. Many friends of our members call when they want prayers because they know we mobilize in prayer for people. We use a group e-mail to send out requests for prayer. Our elders are good role models in prayer. We have a tradition that anyone that wants to make requests or tell us about what God is doing in their lives can come during the final song and share with us - - anything. When they mention anything that remotely needs prayers all the elders come up and pray individually for that person. When somone has a transition in their lives such as graduation, marriage, going away to college, new baby, moving away, etc. the elders always call them up to pray over them. We always spend a time in small groups praying. Sometimes when people move into a new home the elders go out and pray over the house and the occupants. Doing this over time has modeled prayer for the congregation. Members of our Steering Team will be encouraging the congregation to now include PMC in prayer by praying for it during our services.
